Profile:

The County and the Madison County Rescue Squad ("MCRS") have, for several decades, cooperated in order to deliver emergency medical services to the citizens of Madison County. MCRS volunteers have provided countless hours of selfless service and have established an outstanding record in fulfilling the EMS mission. In 1999, at the request of the Squad, the County established an emergency medical services ("EMS") delivery system consisting of a combination of government-employed and volunteer personnel. Pursuant to Virginia Code §27-6.1, the County established a County department referred to as the Madison Department of Emergency Medical Services ("MEMS"). The head of that department is known as the Director, and he reports to the County Administrator. The Director is empowered to make bylaws, rules and regulations and to do all things reasonably necessary to promote the objectives of the department, consistent with Chapter 2, Article 1 of Title 27 of the Code of Virginia and other laws of this Commonwealth.

Madison County Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) is the career department providing emergency medical care to the citizens of Madison County, Virginia. MEMS is available seven days a week from 5:00 am to 6:00 pm by dialing 911. Every staff member holds an advanced life support certification as well as vehicle rescue certification. Additionally, most are trained in at least one technical rescue discipline.

MEMS is one of the most progressive prehospital services in the mid-atlantic region. Under the medical direction of Bill Brady, MD, of the University of Virginia Health System's Department of Emergency Medicine, MEMS providers are trained to perform many advanced level skills and provide dozens of life-saving medications on standing order. Two examples of new treatments that we are providing to the public include 1) the induction of hypothermia in post-resuscitation cardiac arrest patients, and 2) the use of ACE inhibitors in combination with CPAP and nitroglycerine for the treatment of moderate-to-severe CHF exacerbation.
